South Africa has a proud tradition of sporting excellence and its horse racing industry is no different, given that from the late sixties to the present day, South African horses have shown their mettle in global competition, winning big on all five continents.

During the second part of the previous century, a number of South African champions winged their way to the States: Colorado King, Hawaii, Bold Tropic, Prince Florimund and Horse Chestnut all made their presence felt against the best America had to offer.

And whilst London News caught the imagination with a pioneering GR1 win in Hong Kong during the late nineties, it was in the first decade of the new millennium that the South African thoroughbred’s impact on the international stage snowballed remarkably.

There were high-profile successes in most parts of the racing world, but none more so than in Dubai, where the International Carnival provided conditions perfectly suited to the tough, hard-knocking South African racehorses, qualities much respected in the Middle and Far East.

Sadly, in 2011 draconian export measures to curtail any possible outbreak of African Horse Sickness effectively put paid to our best horses being able to campaign overseas and it took 13 years of negotiations before the ban finally came to an end.

In a bold move, a significant group of top horses left for America in March 2024, amongst which the GR1 winners Isivunguvungu and Beach Bomb. That both have since earned black type speaks volumes of the toughness and talent South African horses are renowned for and it was a dream come true when they competed at the Breeders Cup World Championship at Del Mar.

It is only fitting that we acknowledge the South African-bred or raced horses who have excelled on the international stage, amongst which we are proud to mention, are a number of graduates of this sale. Starting with ‘pioneer’ London News, their achievements make for impressive reading.
