SOLID TRADING DEFINES SECOND DAY OF MARCH YEARLING SALE
The 2025 March Yearling Sale drew to a triumphant close on Friday evening. Sold and brisk trading dominated Friday’s session, where demand continued to be strong for quality individuals.
The second day of the Premier Sale was topped by a Pomodoro colt (Lot 228), who was knocked down to Jonathan Snaith for R525 000.
Consigned to the auction by Klawervlei Stud, as Agent, the colt, who shares his sire with the likes of champion Return Flight and this season’s G3 New Turf Carriers Merchants, is a full-brother to the useful War Chariot, and half-brother to both Bella Chica and Fearless Warrior. The former won six times including the Listed Gardenia Stakes, while Fearless Warrior finished second in the G3 Cape Of Good Hope Nursery before going on to enjoy a successful campaign in Hong Kong.
The pricey colt was produced by the speedy Captain Al mare War Path, a three time winner who finished runner up in the Listed Banyana Handicap.
The sale’s aggregate reached R17.475 million, with the average price holding firm at R218 438 and the median reaching R200 000.
A high clearance rate was notable at Friday’s session, with 80 of the 87 yearlings offered finding new homes.
The ASSM Racing Syndicate headed the Leading Buyers standings on Friday, purchasing two yearlings for a total of R900 000. Their purchases were headed by the Riethuiskraal Stud consigned Spirit Of Life, a Querari filly who was knocked down for R475 000.
Promising young sire Erik The Red had eight yearlings fetch R2.04 million to make him Leading Sire on Friday, while Narrow Creek Stud sold seven lots for R2.05 million to head the Vendors premiership.
The sale, which took place at Hollywoodbets Kenilworth in the most glorious weather imaginable, remained well attended over the two days. It was announced following the Premier Sale, that the figures for Day One figures would apply to the first day while the second day of the sale was traditionally held as the Farm and Winter Sale, a sale now defunct.
