VARSFONTEIN STUD SUMMER SALE 2025

Varsfontein Stud was founded in 1974 and has grown into one of the largest producers of thoroughbred racehorses in SA.

Not only has the farm built up an enviable broodmare band but the resident stallions (Gimmethegreenlight (AUS), Master of My Fate, Erik the Red and Sandringham Summit), add value to Varsfontein as well as the whole SA racing industry.

Varsfontein brings a dozen yearling to market on the 23 January 2025 at the CRS Summer Sale.

Five of them are by the speedball, Erik the Red – a son of Champion Sire, Captain Al, ex Covenant, from a most prolific female line.

Erik the Red, a high- class sprinter, won the G2 Umkhomazi Stakes, and his career top came in the Gr 2 Cape Merchants when defeating Equus Champion Sprinter, Rio Querari.

These are his yearlings: Lot 2 is a first foal of Europeana (by Gimmethegreenlight (AUS)); Lot 34’s dam, Miss Texas is a half- sister to G1 Allan Robertson heroine, Miss Florida; Lot 37’s dam Peace Flower is a half-sister to G1 Majorca Stakes winner, Nightingale: Lot 47 is a first foal ex Rotunda from the famous Mystic Spring family.

Maybe Erik the Red is saving the best till last as Lot 89 is a colt out of Congestion Charge, and thus a half- brother to the outstanding, Surcharge/Yulong Prince, a multiple G1 winner in SA and Australia. This prized colt can be viewed in Stable D5.

Lot 79 is a Master of My Fate colt. The sire has produced 27 SW’s from 341 winners. The second dam, Arcola was a notable stayer who won the SA Oaks.

Malmoos, Triple Crown winner in SA in 2020/21, is just beginning his career as a stallion. His colt out of the Oratorio mare, Tally Ho will attract full focus from serious buyers as her only foal to race to date is VJ’s Angel, winner of the G1 Greyville Champion Stakes.

Gimmethegreenlight(AUS) is a legend! He is three times Champion Sire in SA with 69 SW’s and 12 G1 winners from 744 runners.

Varsfontein have five Gimme’s on this Summer Sale – Lots 30, 41, 72, 84 & 86.

Lot 84 is out of Canukeepitsecret and thus a half to smart 3YO, Talk to the Master, from the renowned Secret of Victoria female line. This filly is yet another candidate from Varsfontein’s powerful draft bound to generate plenty of interest amongst discerning buyers.
